Think of a play, book, TV show, or movie that uses "a play within a play" concept to tell the story. Why does this work?

Play within a play works because it basically extends the character range beyond monologues or soliloquy. It elaborates on different aspects that the overall play might find redundant and often serves to bring certain aspects of different characters to full light if that hasn't happened already.

Since traditional theatre had limitations regarding multi-media, the play within the play provided a way to explore the subject without interferring directly with the storyline. It can be anything from an amusing diversion to a deeper exploration of the themes in the play.
