Cuba was a colony of Spain from the 16th century to about 1898. Although the Cubans had virtually defeated the Spanish in their war of independence, the US effectively took over. (it's complicated). The (semi-independent) Republic of Cuba was formed in 1902.

In 1959, the revolutionary forces under Fidel Castro took control of the country from Batista (who in turn was ruling after a coup in 1952).

Other important dates:

1492 - Columbus lands on Cuba

1853 - birth of José Martí
1868 - Carlos Manuel de Céspedes proclaims Cuban independence in the historic “Grito de Yara.”
1895 - start of the final war of independence. José Martí is killed in his first appearance on the battlefield.
1953 - Castro leads unsuccessful assault on the Moncada barracks, is jailed.
