Let's suppose you lived in a rented flat, attended college and a part time job. Then you attempted sui*ide and failed and had to spend time in medical/mental hospital.

What happens in regard to your home/college/work would you lose it all or would you be given so much time to get back into it? What if you had to stay in hospital for a few months? Would everything still be in place for you coming out?

You would more than likely lose it all. Your employer won't want to spend time and money training and depending on someone who is sucidal, it is a bad financial investment for the company. College moves on with, or without you. They may allow you to attend next semester but the current one will be lost, time stands still for no one. You may still have your apartment provided you have an understanding landlord who hasn't thrown your stuff out on the street while you were in the nut house. This all sounds bad because it is.
REMEMBER: SUICIDE IS A PERMANENT SOLUTION TO A TEMPORARY PROBLEM!

Unless the rent was kept up by you or someone who cared about you, then you would be evicted for non-payment of rent.

I assume that unless your final exams had been taken and all final papers turned in to your college professors then you would not get any credit for those courses in which you were enrolled at the time of the attempted suicide.

As far as your part-time job, I don't believe that there are any state or Federal employment laws that would ensure that you had a position to return to after hospitalization. There is the Americans With Disabilities Act to consider, but you should consult an employment specialist.

What's more troubling is the fact that you or someone who you know is contemplating a suicide attempt. I would urge you to seek help for yourself or your friend. There are people who care about you or your friend even if you or your friend can't see that at the moment because of depression or other mental health issues. Please re-consider this suicide attempt and find a professional to talk things over with you. Your college should have a health unit where you could find a person who wants to help you or your friend. Please get the help that you deserve.

Sounds like you are basing this question on the concept that you are/should be still in childhood and parents etc will make things 'fair' for you. They can't, it's not life in theory anymore, every cause will have an effect on the rest of your life.

You may want to consult with someone at the school and/or workplace on their policies regarding those situations. Tread carefully, they may think you are "at risk" and depending on how your laws are setup regarding that sort of stuff, could get you institutionalized for evaluation.

It depends on your school and your instructors. If you had a letter from your Dr. explaining the situation, I think you would still be in the same place you were before this happened.

Depends on how much others would be willing to understand and help one get back on their feet. Eg. the landlord, and college instructors and supervisor on the job.

Without someone taking care of the bills and withdrawing from class, all would be lost. Why would someone contemplating suicide care about these things anyway?
