no, seriously it seems like their are more better paying jobs with fewer hours like private contracters in iraq make $600 a day tax free. hell strippers and porn stars make more money than college educated people and all they have to do is show off their goods or suck something on camera . and yes not everyone can do that cause of psychological effects or just plain don't have good bodys.hell bounty hunters make alot of money too almost the same as mercenaries although mercenaries aren't allowed to go back to their native soil. but all in all college educations don't do squat but make you work your *** off and make you pay back most of the good money you earned for no reason

As a person with two and a half degrees...and a whole lot of ingenuity...I can say with a fair amount of certainty that it is just bull.

If I had been smart, I would have pursued my interests right out of high school instead of taking the expensive detour through college. I'd be well on my way to retirement by now.

This topic has been and will be discussed. The jobs that you have indicated are exactly that jobs. They are relatively short term, risky, and are based on talents that fade with age and ability. Why go to college to study for career? You are looking for the long term, where you may earn less over the short term, but over the long term you will always receive a paycheck, a weekly paycheck is a good thing. With a college education, more opportunities are open up to a person. Some college educations are more valuable than others. A cliche sums it up "If you think education is expensive try Ignorance."

Law, medicine and other health services, teaching, research and business all seem to offer more opportunities to those who went to college for it.

You've named a couple of things people can do to make decent money, but supply would exceed demand if everyone decided to try to find jobs like that, and then there wouldn't actually be enough money floating around to pay such high dollars.

This is like the argument that some conservatives make when it comes to social programs. They apply a blanket statement like "just work hard enough and earn it... I did!" Well in theory that's correct. Virtually anybody could work hard enough to improve their situation. But if EVERYBODY began working as hard as absolutely possible, there would still only be one or two who get rich. There aren't unlimited opportunities to make everyone wealthy. Just a few here and there.

College has opened a lot of doors for me. It's also been the wonderful middle ground between childhood and adulthood. I got to spend five+ years (undergrad and grad school) having complete autonomy without necessarily having complete responsibility.

College is not a false sense for a better life. Just think about it. How likely is it that your going become any of those things? Those things are just much more publicized in the media. Who wants to hear about a scientist, talk about boring to hear about. Those mercenaries are making that much money but they are away from their families, their life's are in danger, they don't even get to be home to enjoy that money. Not to mention they many of them are going to court for doing something wrong on the battlefield.

There are no guarantees that your going to be making lots of money because you are going to college. But it opens up a lot more opportunities for you to make money than if you have only graduated from high school.

But you're forgetting that each of those jobs are dangerous and basically rely on your physical ability not your mind. Being a contractor in Iraq is extremely dangerous. Strippers and porn stars rely on their looks. They won't always have their youthful good looks.
Going to college and getting a higher education is more beneficial in the long run.

There is no guarantee that a collecge education will bring you success. Some people with Ph.D's in things like the humanities are tending bar and doing manual labor.
