Who could I compare to Tim Burton, who wrote gruesome and nightmarish stories (both animated and real life), in a compare and contrast essay?

They could be very similar or very different.

Edgar Poe is great in terms of macabre things and buried alive (Tim Burton quotes Raven in his Vincent), but Poe was not a drawer/painter.

Roald Dahl is OK too since his stories (Fantastic Mr Fox, Chocolate Factory, Mathilda) are for adults disguised for the children's ones.

Bela Lugosi never wrote stories, and Ed Wood wrote scripts and porn/erotica novels with elements of dark and grusome.

I think the better analogy is Walt Disney being an animator and creator of fantasy worlds and even a better one is Dr Seuss. Mr Burton quotes him as the influence in his interviews, the reviews on Burton's book 'Melancholy Death of Oyster Boy and Other Stories' mention Seuss as well.

They both have the blend of childish nightmares, the way their poems are made and clearly artisitc frame-by-frame vision where pictures tell, enhance and never just illustrate the story. Very storyboard like.

Roald Dahl...he wrote some weird stories, including James and the Giant Peach as well as Charlie and the Choc Factory, both which Burton made into movies.
