This kid who killed in the Omaha mall wanted fame. He got it! I am sure there are many other sickos out there plotting their future fame. They do not show crazies running out on football fields but will give us a life story of this kid who otherwise would have been unknown.

Does the Government control the media? Do ratings control the media? Can we contact our Congressmen? Should we boycott newspapers and magazines that glorify these morons? Seems like we should be doing SOMETHING!

Maybe someone should sue the media when something like this happens because they encourage it!

Your thoughts?

Do we really have to know WHO this kid is? I agree the public is curious but they can report on a nameless and faceless person. This way they can still report the facts but not give these idiots an identity.

They should talk about the incidence and the victims instead of giving hours of attention to the murders history and possible reasons. Just like the guy in Virginia Tech, so many pages and hours to explain his hate to the US people may motivate another guy full of hatred to do the same. Shameful.

There is an old saying in the media: "If it bleeds, it leads."

Ratings primarily control what news different media coughs up. Government controls are limited. Boycotting only works if large numbers of people refuse to purchase or view the news for a long period of time. This means the media would have to lose money and be looking at losing a lot of money over a long haul. First the readership would have to drop, and then the ad revenue would have to fall off. That's not likely to happen given the addiction Americans have for news.

There's nothing to sue for unless it's specifically libel, slander or a gross violation of privacy - and even then it's up to a court to decide. Not many have the funds or the stomach for the process.

Honestly, though, any encouragement by the media is indirect. The direct encouragement comes from the readership that, no matter what they say, continue to read whatever is put out - and many patronize those who place ads in/with that media. The reader is the driving force behind what gets published. If we didn't read it, they wouldn't publish it because it wouldn't make money.

Your best bet is start with yourself. Don't buy or view it. Don't buy stuff from the businesses that place ads with a given media. For sure it's useless to listen to most commentary about a news event because this itself is not news.

There is plenty of good news to be had, and most news is educational, entertaining and interesting - even if it doesn't make the front page. It helps to know where to look (see source) and what to avoid.

The media is following the guidelines they set up for Congress which simply says." IGNORE THE PEOPLE". The power of the purse is the only weapon we have and by not buying the rag sheets or watching the trash on TV we lower their bottom lines and then they may pay attention.

this is because the laws have changed for raising kids, you go to jail for correcting your kids if you put your hands on them , and some parents just don't care what thier kids turn out to be like as long as they are out of the house, kids and teenagers have no respect for anyone or thier propety, all they care about is having a good time at others peoples expence with no regard for what happens at the end

Stop buying the newspapers. Stop watching the news. Stop clicking on the headlines on the web. Write to the companies that you have stopped buying their products and why.

Buy products that don't glorify these things.

Money does talk.

dont think we will ever stop the media unless there is a law with stiff fines bigger than their profits put in place......The only way this country is going to get things done is for us, as a whole, to unite and protest......but no one cares enough to actually do that anymore....only a handfull...and that wont do it....
