From a watch brand called 'syler'... he used to fix watches and clocks for a living and came up with that name.

The name of the company that makes watches are Sylar and that's where Gabriel Gray aka Sylar gets the name from.
The episode is called Six Months Ago and this is were we are introduced to Gabriel Gray aka Sylar.

In the flashback episode when we see the emergence of Sylar, you see Gabriel (his real name) talking to a customer in his watch and clock repair shop.
When the customer asks his name, Gabriel peers around, sees a watch with the name "Sylar" on the face and says "I'm Sylar...".

He used to fix watches. That is where he got is name from because when he turned evil, the watch in his hand was made the the company called Sylar. So he decided that that was going to be his evil name. Now when he is thinking evil, we hear the tick, tock of a clock. Great show!

Gabriel Grey adopted the name of Sylar from a brand name of watch that he owned (a hand me down from an absent/deceased father I think, that he was always fixing)

He was on the phone to someone, I think it was Suresh, when he was asked what his name was. He looked at the watch he was fixing and it had the brand name "Sylar" so he called himself Sylar.
