Tricky and fraught with danger - for YOU. If anyone gets hurt, the Human Rights Act will not apply to you (no matter how many solicitors reply to this question saying that that is nonsense). The Act will be applied to the yobs. They will be protected and you might be in trouble.
You cannot win - only lose or draw. There is nothing in it for you, so walk away if you can.

I would hope so. We are told to use 'reasonable force', but who on earth in the heat of the moment can think of that.
I suppose jumping on a yob lying unconscious woud be frowned upon!

In general, I think the law will protect a person if they use physical force to detain a criminal or to prevent a crime from occuring. There are laws that limit what a person can and cannot do in order to prevent a crime or violence, and the laws vary by state, but you can't use excessive force. For example, you can't shoot a shoplifter. You can use deadly force in most states if you reasonably believe a person's life is in danger. A good rule when it comes to shooting somebody in self defense of your own life: don't shoot them while they're facing away from you.

Depends on the state you're in. It also depends on exactly what you do. Most of the time, the police won't press charges. For example, I recently heard of a guy who saw that 2 guys were robbing his neighbor. He shot them both dead and the police still haven't pressed charges. That's Texas for you.

I know for a fact it won't. And it's even so bad the person you do what you had to do to stop, has more rights than you do.
