Honestly, BALSA is TOO soft for Whittlin'

I started on scrap pine, douglas fir, and redwood... all are straight grained, reasonably soft, and you can find reasonably close grained wood.

My first piece was a neckerchief slide out of douglas fir... a lumberjacks head.

My first "elaborate" piece was the Boy Scout logo in bas-relief on redwood.

Good Luck, and ALWAYS use a SHARP knife...

If you are brand new at it start with easy soft balsa.

Once you can control your blade go with clear pine. Take that to the stage where you can get exactly the results you want.

After that you could try fruitwoods and exotic hardwoods.

Ash is good, nothing better than a nice piece of ash.
