Gamma rays are definitely not good for you. They are the most ionizing, highest frequencies of the whole electromagnetic spectrum, meaning that they would be the most harmful to cells and DNA. They are caused by only the most energetic processes in nature, like the annihilation of matter with antimatter and supernova explosions. Because of this, they are relatively rare or from sources so distant as to be harmless to us. They can also come from the radioactive decay of some elements, but those isotopes are also rare.

Define rays. As members of the electromagnetic spectrum or as components of radioactive decay?

Gamma rays are the most dangerous members in the electromagnetic spectrum although x rays and UVs are also very dangerous. They are all ionizing radiation which means they have the punch to dislocate electrons in molecules such as our DNA. Damaged DNA can cause cancer. But gamma rays mostly pass through matter like a human body. Only rarely do they interact with matter. X-rays are more prone to interact and UV doesn´t penetrate much of the skin at all. We have pigments that can handle most types of UV but some wavelenghts can cause skincancer. As gamma rays can penetrate every part of the body they can cause damage anywhere in the body. This makes them the most dangerous.

Nuclear explosions can occur in space. They don´t require any oxygen.

Most dangerous what? They are damaging to human life. We saw that when we dropped atomic bombs on Japan. Gamma rays from space come from the decay of some elements, and from massive explosions called gamma ray bursts. These result from the collapse of a massive star and from the merging of two neutron stars. If either of these occurred in our galaxy, this could be very bad for life on Earth.

Gammas have the ability to penetrate thicker material than say alphas or betas because gammas do not possess any mass or any charge, so as a result they have less of a tendency to interact with matter.

Gammas are extremely high energy, and they are also high frequency which has a corresponding low wavelength.

i admire them the two. i've got no longer heard something with the help of the two band that i did no longer like. i understand a good style of people think of that Helloween ended with the Keeper albums, yet i admire Rabbit do no longer Come trouble-free a good purchase. And Gamma Ray is only out of the ordinary. fortuitously for the reason that the two bands are traveling jointly this autumn, i do no longer relatively could choose for. no longer in basic terms do i'm getting an excellent visual charm with the help of them in my fatherland (Baltimore, MD), yet i additionally gets to be certain them kick off the weekend for ProgPower IX in Atlanta, GA some days later. Wahoo!

If you want to play with nature today, stand in the path of a gamma ray, it will zip right through you, and do severe damage to your DNA.

Yes gamma radiation is dangerous.
It carries more energy and is more penetrating
than the longer x-rays.
It comes from very high energy events and so in spite
of its being very dificult to focus is valuble in astronomy.
