It is a long history that started with two men who had very similar opinions about the world, named Sy Kutb, and Leo Strauss. While the two of them never met, their followers used each other to give themselves power, by giving each other power as the enemy.
Osama was a marginal player but had a lot of money, and a name that was easier to pronounce.
The BBC did a great show that showed the whole thing

Osama is just a puppet of U.S. imperialistic policy. He is the boogyman that our leaders want us to fear so we will abey the most restrictive and unfair laws and measures designed take away our freedoms. They can't kill him, because then they would have to find another stooge to be the bad guy.

Osama is upset about Israel first of all. After that, his main problem is that he doesn't believe "infidels" should be on middle eastern soil and the "infidels" are the US and our allies or non-muslims.

The US also supported the division of Palestine which created hundreds of thousands of Arab refugees -- not that the world is Osama's system to annihilate and reinvent. But that's what he wants to do. He's a nihilist.
