The Boss wrote it.

First recorded by Robert Gordon in 1978, who received some modest album oriented rock radio airplay with it. It was then recorded and released by The Pointer Sisters later in 1978, who gained a major hit from it, reaching number two in early 1979 on the U.S. pop chart.

Springsteen himself only released it as late as 1986 (but it was a late 70s version.

Elvis Presley had been the original intended recipient of the song.

This song is sometimes confused with the songs of the same name by Jimi Hendrix and another by Arthur Brown. They are all different songs, as shown below.

"Fire" was written by Bruce Springsteen and originally intended for use by Elvis Presley. It was first recorded by Robert Gordon in 1978, who received some modest album oriented rock radio airplay with it. It was then recorded and released by The Pointer Sisters later in 1978, who gained a major hit from it, reaching number two in early 1979 on the U.S. pop chart.

There was a different song called "Fire" recorded by The Crazy World of Arthur Brown in 1968.
