Start as early as you can getting him legged up, get him in physical shape, so that when you are able to get him behind cattle, he will physically be able to do what you ask of him. I know that it isn't the same, but one of the roping dummies that is pulled by another horse that you can practice both ends on really helps with your horse scoring, your technique and just plain timing..this comes first, this comes second, this comes...oops, thumbs up, this comes third...things like that, even before you can get behind live cattle. That way you can get a leg up on spring practice. I would also check out Internet, saddle clubs, roping clubs, etc or anyone that has an indoor arena that would allow you to get your horse around cattle, or even around other horses, would help, when the weather is still bad. Be sure and keep him vaccinated and wormed, main thing, get and keep him and you physically fit, that will reduce a lot of injuries for you both. Good luck and have fun.

Why dont you bypass on trails or a community it fairly is risk-free and avaliabe to apply like a huge open feild. previously hand set up courses and artwork him out. you additionally can try lunging him around the barrels and around a around ring. This works on reaction time, gaits, switching leads, switching instructions. consistent with threat you are able to take an afternoon or 2 off each and each week to kick back and bypass on trails so he gets a metamorphosis of atmosphere and isnt bored.

Is there a roping club that you can join?

Usually there is and they have access to indoor and cows. I would start talking around and see if you can find one, you might have to drive.

I used to have to drive 120 miles one way to do reining cowhorse that my mule desperately enjoyed all winter, just to keep him in shape.

Other than that, riding, lots of transitions, lots of stops and backs. If you can find cows that will help 100%

I think it's probably best to just get him into shape especially if you don't have the stock you need to practice. It seems to me that in the spring when everyone is getting ready to rodeo again, the thing that is the hardest to do is get them back in shape. If you do that now, you'll be one step ahead. :-)

Practice is key. Work with the horse as much as you can to keep him in shape.

Just work him as much as possible, and do what you would do in a show. Thats all you really can do to make him ready.
