Right now it would cost me 30 dollars per year or 750/1,000 dollars for a lifetime membership. I don't know if it would be worth it or if it would just be another scam by my university.

Try it for a year and see if you appreciate it enough to spend the larger amount for a lifetime. Usually being a member of the alumni association is more valuable if you are continuing to live in the city where your school is after graduation, so that you could attend the events, participate in activities, and take advantage of opportunities like the chance to keep using the library. If you live in another city where there are a lot of other alumni, it can offer a way of getting to know people, which can be useful. On the other hand, if you are one of very few alumni living in your area, the advantages may be very limited.

I guess it depends on how you feel about your school, what "services" you get as a result of membership, your financial situation can acommodate this, etc.
