I have to do a talk on this but all the reports I've read...well i don't really understand them.Just wondering can you tell me what happened?
what where they protesting about?
any other information, or your views would be greatly appreciated,

there are elections in China.....you can vote for this guy. If you don't vote at all, you have to answer why.

You can have a job. The Communist Party tells you what it is. Don't like it? You can spend the next ten years picking up yak dung.

Want to open a business. The Party tells you what business. and tells you what to charge.

Want to have a child? GO ahead. Want to have a second child? You are taken to a hospital and force-ably aborted.

Want to know whats going on outside China? The Party will tell you all you need to know. Want to read a foreign newspaper or listen to a foreign radio broadcast? Want to spend 5 years in prison?

Well, the kids in Tienanmen's didn't like those choices. There were cracks starting to appear in the Communist philosophy.....the same cracks that a few years earlier had led the people of Russia and Eastern Europe to say......hey! This communism thing just doesn't work.
The kids were starting to get an idea that the rest of the world....even in Russia.... now had some choices about how they could live their life.

Remember, an Assembly of the People....unless it was government organized.was illegal in China. It was also almost unheard of. The old men that made up the Chinese Politburo looked out their windows at the Square and saw 100,000 people out there who weren't buying it.

It scared them silly.

And you know what pushed them over the edge?

the third day the kids decided to have sculpture contest and a parade.. Construct floats that reflected their ideas and their ideals.

500? 1,000? 5,000? Imagine if Bush or Blair or any Western leader sent the Army to kill thousands protesting in London or DC?

Yankee has it right. Tianenmen Square was the first stirrings of democracy in China. It was crushed by troops unrelated to the protestors. Most of the dead were students and no one knows exactly how many died. The figures range from 100 to 10,000.

Following that protest, there was another crackdown on higher education in China. Professors were arrested as were student leaders. We'll never know how many of those disappeared.

China is finally starting to relax its grip on its society and is trying to make an orderly entrance into the world economy, but that's only because most of those old men are now gone.
