Cranberries Combat Infection “Cranberry juice has a long and distinguished history,” says The Times of London. “It had a great reputation both as a medicine and as a drink among Native Americans [and] had been used by American sailors to ward off scurvy.” Rich in vitamin C and antioxidants, “cranberry juice also has antimicrobial qualities, which makes it especially effective in combating urinary-tract infections.” But this is not due to the juice’s effect on urine acidity, as was previously thought. Rather, says The Times, it stems from substances in the juice that “prevent the E. coli bacteria [the cause of most infections, including cystitis] from sticking to the urinary-tract wall, so that the bacteria are flushed away before an infection can become established.” Researchers have also found that cranberry juice can reduce the effects of gum disease.

extracts in simple terms is a concentrated form of whatever herb. cranberry is good for the kidneys and bladder.it like teflon coats the kidney and bladder walls so the bacteria can't stick to them.
very few people like cranberry juice because it's so sour/tart. ocean spray is the most popular name brand. but notice that most of it is cocktail drink and not pure juice. anything other than pure juice has sugar in it. if you find you don't like the pure juice go to whole foods market, wild oats market or vitamin shoppe and get cranberry in a caplet. it's pretty cheap too.
if you do have an infection stay away from sugar and simple carbohydrates because they feed the bad bacteria. another thing that you'll need is a probiotic. i use one called healthy trinity by natran.

I think that extract is just flavoring where cranberry juice actually has all the good nutrients that your body needs. With UTIs, drink lots of water, cranberry juice and possibly take the over-the-counter pills called AZO.

I never feel comfortable taking
a whole food, with all it's complex nutrients and reducing it to an oil or extract, with unknown molecular structure.
My own (old-fashioned) way
of providing something good,
with a minimum of manipulation is this:
Go buy a package of frozen
cranberries. Put them in a
pot and add about 2-3 qts.
water. Boil until they "pop"
then let rest and cool.
Put in processor and liquify.
Then strain (leave some small
bits in) and put in a jar in the
frig.
Drink 1/2-1 small glass per
eve. Do not add sugar.

It is like REALLY STRONG cranberry juice. But what I find works best for a UTI is this product called "Kidney Bladder" from Natures Way. It works better than any other remedy and WAY better than any horrible antibiotic doctors gave me. I put a link below so you can read about it and find a store that carries it for you.
