It's just the number of gears. More gears means better fuel economy usually, and smoother transitions between gears.
Imagine a 2-speed transmission... it would be difficult to shift smoothly from 0 to 75 MPH with just two. More is generally better.

More gears in the transmission (automatic or standard) the better. Low gear in a five or six speed transmission is numerically a lower gear ratio than a four speed transmission. This means simply the vehicle will start from a dead stop quicker and by the time the trans. shifts into fifth or sixth gear (overdriven gears) the engine RPM's will be lower for fuel economy.
Overdrive means the engine crankshaft is turning slower than the drive shaft. In front wheel driven cars this isn't quite true as there is no drive shaft, only halfshafts from the transmission ring gear to the front wheel bearing hub assembly. Front wheel drive cars still have ring, pinion and spider gears but they are inside the transmission. The small pinion gear in a front wheel drive car is turning slower than the crankshaft while the transmission is in fifth and sixth gear.
This isn't the whole story though. As you know any engine develops horsepower and more importantly torque. The real reason behind having more forward gears is so that the transmission more realistically matches the ground speed of the vehicle with the greatest amount of torque form the motor depending upon the load and or throttle opening. The more gears you have the efficiency of the motor is much better.
In the real world today all the car manufactures are scrambling to build motors that make the greatest amount of torque and horsepower at the lowest RPM possible for fuel economy. If you scrounge around on the internet you may find real everyday car sites under specifications which show engine torque and horsepower.

4 speed auto and 5 speed auto, 5 speed auto has a extra higher gear ratio to give you better fuel mileage. Plus 4 speed autos were common back in the 1960's to 80's. Nowadays as far as I know most cars come with a 5 speed auto/overdrive. I personally preffer an Eaton-Fuller lightning 10...don't worry that last remark wasn't 'car' related:-)

The 4 & 5 refer to the number of forward gears the transmission has. As for which is better-- the advantage of more speeds/gears is probably twofold--the higher gears allow the engine to work easier and also would probably give a bit better gas mileage.

More gears usually means better mileage and smoother acceleration. It can also be sportier with more gears to go thru

4 speed has 4 speeds
5 speed has 5 speeds
Both of these are automatic which means they are automatic.
5 speeds seem to be the popular choice at this time.
In the 1960's they were mostly 3 speeds.

How many forward gears the car has.As for which one is better, typically the higher number of gears, the better acceleration and fuel economy.
