The poverty in the south in the 30's was crippling. In many parts of the south there was still sharecropping going on. If you don't know what that means, generally it meant poor white people or mostly black were allowed a piece of land on a farm to farm but most of the crop went to the land owner. There was still no electricity to many rural areas. The souths major economic contribution was farming there was barely any industrialization.

They were separated and treated very badly. Segregation didn't end until late 1960's/ early 1970's. The city hall in Dallas, Texas where I am now still has what used to be "WHITE'S ONLY" signs, but they have been covered with paint.

No wait that continued untill well into the 1960's(remembering the murders Of martin Luther King And Malcolm X and Pres Kennedy) so it wasn't just the 30's lol god bless US democracy and your human rights record ..
