In addition to volume = (length)*(width)*(height) you will need
Surface area =
2*(length)*(width) + 2*(length)*(height) + 2*(width)*(height)

If all the sides are squares this simplifies to volume = side^3
and Surface area = 6*side^2

But I think in your case only the base is square:

volume = (length)^2*(height)

Surface area = 2*(length)^2 + 4*(length)*(height)

First stop and think. A square is going to have all sides that are equal. Now think of the equations that volume and surface area take into account. Volume is calculated by length x width x height. You should be able to calculate the dimensions using the 48 cubic inches. In other words what times itself three times equals 48? This will not be a whole a number. If you use the way I stated write out the equation as X^3=48.

I am unsure what level of math class you are in. The way I described above uses powers. There is more than likely a different way to solve.

Well, if the total surface area is 112 square inches, then each surface must be 18 2/3 square inches right? So square root it and...ehh nevermind. I'm in advanced math but only 7th grade lol. Don't trust me. Sorry I wasn't of much help.

square box has all sides the same. is this an open box?
v = x*x*x = x^3 = 48
if open box the surface area
base *5 = 5x^3 = 112
you solve

They just put them in. It's not difficult. If you mean why is a pizza round but a box is square it is because it is cheaper to make a square box than a round one and quicker and easier to make a round pizza than a square one.

Square sides x inches. Other sides y inches. Volume x^2 y. Area 2x^2 +4xy. Now solve.

Now you know HOW to do it, you expect someone to do it for you? Actually there isn't enough information to find an answer.
