A liberal would say that a proper role for government is to regulate and oversee the economy. Liberals say it's proper for government to ensure that companies do the right thing (such as pay minimum wages), and to ensure that people act responsibly in their finances (such as requiring contributions to retirement savings).
A conservative would say that a proper role for government is to regulate and oversee morality. Conservatives say it's proper for government to ensure that people are punished for immoral acts (such as taking drugs), and that people act appropriately in their marriages (such as banning homosexual marriage).
A libertarian would say that neither of those is a proper role for government. Libertarians say that the only proper role is to maintain an army for defense against invasion, to maintain a court system for ensuring justice, and other constitutionally defined roles.
A populist would say that both economic and moral intervention are proper roles for government.
Some people classify libertarians as conservatives and some classify populists as liberals. Those definitions fall apart when libertarians talk about moral issues like abortion (pro-choice) or drugs (pro-legalization).

I don't think there a difference really, I think they are playing the same games with us Americans and doing what is best for their careers and their own interests. If you don't have to pay into Social Security because you have a better plan from the government would you take care of the system? If you have money to send your kids to better schools would take care of the public schools? If you could vote yourself a raise for doing a lousy job would you? So why are we having so many problems in this country when it come to these issues, because our politicians have no interest in except them for themselves. Repulicrats and Demicans that is what we have, They are no different. That is just a few obvious and petty complaints with the our politicians it gets a lot worst.

LBJ in signing the Civil Rights Act of 1964 said "we just lost the South for a generation".....but he signed that legislation anyway cuz it was the right thing to do.
He was correct about the south cuz he knew his folk are virulent RACISTS. Nixon exploited that racism vis-a-vis the Southern Strategy; all the so-called Dixie-crats, that were to be lost, then fled into the Republican Party which welcomed these knuckle draggers with open arms! Segregation Now, segreation tomorrow, segregation Forever!!
Then along came the Religious Right and thier Crack-Pot same as the Taliban, orthodox message and the Republicans welcomed them with open arms under the guise of "traditionalist" when in fact they knew it was another "Wedge" issue they could exploit! seeing as how most of those same Viscious Racists also hate anyone differrent than themselves be skin color, creed, sexual orientation, etc
What these knuckle draggers dont see, cuz of their blind rage, is that the MultiNational corps have co-opted our govt, with the collaberation of both sides of congress but mostly the Repubs! The muli's are intent on dragging down wages at the expense of working folks and even the so called knowledge workers, 'puter programmers, even MD's that review X-rays and MRI's arent safe (forget thier name)
There are always well paid collaborators...
Did you know for instance that Rush Limbo is pro-choice, like many folks he wishes women wouldnt have them but I heard him say it meself!!

Democrats are pro-slavery, anti-civil-rights, anti-education, pro-socialism, pro-fascism.
Republicans are anti-slavery, pro-civil rights, pro-education, pro-responsible capitalism, anti-fascism.
This is really easy to see over the history of the political parties. Today Democratic rhetoric sounds verbatim what it sounded like in the 1860's. The president is a liar, this war is all about economic resources, this is an illegal war. The only difference is that Democrats are not lynching Iraqi's in the streets of New York city the way the lynched black there.
Of course there are the many civil rights votes that the majority of Democrats opposed including the 1964 civil rights votes.
Imprisoning Japanese Americans for ethnic reasons.
Driving tanks into the side of a church and burning the children there alive, supposedly to "help them" by forcing them away from their religious beliefs.

The Republicans are largely racist, and don't want to pay taxes. They hide behind the disguise of religion, to gain support.
The Democratic Party is largely diverse, it welcomes anyone from any social-economic background as well anyone from any racial group, or religious group. They believe in taxes to keep the government running and to assist those less fortunate. But they don't follow socialism as some have claimed.

Another simplistic answer - Republicans want to control what you do in your private life while Democrats want to control what you do in your business life.
You need way better research than Yahoo Answers, believe me!!
EDIT Howdy Doody, has it occurred to you that the dumb answers are hnere because this venue is not for lengthy dissertations, like I said, this is not the place to research it. By the way, where is your intelligent response?

The stupidity of the answers on here is astounding!
It sounds like a bunch of 14 year old kids trying to reiterate what their liberal teacher told them in school.
