Safer. But only when used properly. And by that I mean only used on those who are 100% the ones who did the crime. Anything less (because humans are infalable) is remiss in our responsibilites as a society. I'm all for eye for an eye, making an example of the trash of this world - but only when we are completely positive the person did the crime. Too many instances of the wrong person on death row - keep me from saying off with their heads. But people like Dahmer, Manson, Gacy, Hussein, etc etc etc ---- those are the ones that death penalty is in place for. Why should we pay to keep them alive? Where they get fed 3 meals a day, have a roof over their heads, a job that pays (no matter how little it pays - it does) health care, water to shower in, a bed to sleep in... the list goes on and on. There are people all over the world who have done nothing wrong other than fallen on hard circumstances that do not have any of the benefits our prisoners have. It's bad enough that we coddle most prisoners - why in the world should we allow the Dahmers of this world to live - much less live in better conditions than 1/3 of our country? I think not!
EDIT: As far as being a dterent? In most cases no it's not - because the ones who are going to deserve the death penalty are the ones who know what they are doing is wrong but don't care. In fact, I belileve that is half the high for them. So the death penalty has no affect on them. It's not a deterrent, and it is not revenge - it is justice.

i don't have self belief that capital punishment is the respond. For one ingredient, I agree that persons committing homicide don't think they gets caught. the two that, or they do no longer care one way or the different. additionally, I even have this quite extraordinary feeling in my gut approximately people who ask to be witnesses to an execution. That seems grisly to me. isn't an execution a type of homicide? that's planned. that's without emotion. that's irreversible. it is going to by no ability carry returned the guy who improve into murdered. And, what while you're actual executing an harmless individual - it does take place. would not we actually cut back crime if we had stiffer outcomes for drug appropriate crimes? What approximately removing particular weapons from society, which includes AK - 47s? Is there quite any choose for a non-protection rigidity use of an attack rifle?

The death penalty doesn't prevent others from committing murder. No reputable study shows the death penalty to be a deterrent. To be a deterrent a punishment must be sure and swift. The death penalty is neither. Criminals do not think about consequences, do not think they will be caught (they may not think at all.)

Homicide rates and rates of violent crime are higher in states and regions that have it than in states that don’t. New York City is on track to have the lowest murder rate in 45 years. And there is no death penalty in New York State.

Your question could easily be answered by looking at the murder rates of countries that don't have the death penalty and comparing them with those that do have the death penalty. But even if capitol punishment doesn't make for a safer society, that doesn't mean it isn't an appropriate form of punishment for the crime committed.

Let us look objectively and scientifically at the evidence on the ground.
The more violent societies are those whose governments kill their own citizens.
The safer societies, such as those in Europe, have outlawed capital punishment.
Of course that means you cannot allow mental patients and small children access to firearms, and in America that would be unconstitutional. As it is you need to wear a bullet proof vest to do you Christmas shopping and petulant two-year-olds shoot their parents.

I once did a paper on this topic as well. My belief and what I found out is that capital punishment is not a deterrent to people who commit crimes, meaning that capital punishment does not actually prevent or reduce crime. I think that capital punishment is really about revenge, which I think is a really bad statement for countries or states to make. I think the focus should be on things that really reduce crime, such as gun control, reduction of poverty, reduction of drug availability, etc. To me, the death penalty just gives the message that we are as bad as the criminals themselves.

omg i did this capital punishment paper like four times in my f*cking life. Capital punishment does not deter crimes nor does it create more crimes. Capital punishment doesnt' have an effect because when someone kills another, the death penalty is not going through their minds. Society with or without capital punishment is the same to criminals. Eventhough its scary, when you kill someone without thinking, who cares aobut the death penalty.

The death penalty isn't effective as a deterrent for violent crime. It's not about justice or crime reductions, it's simply a form of government sanctioned revenge. It reflects the violent nature of the culture that endorses it.

safer... one less dirtbag on the street.
I don't think it's a deterrant though... just a way of taking out the trash.
