If he is close to his family they should be told and quickly. How would you feel if you waited and he didn't?

Of course, his family first of all, if they are nice people, and will look after him in your opinion. His very close friends if you ask them with discretion to keep an eye on him. I think that fact that you're asking means you should, you can't look after him 24/7 and if he really is considering it, you have to ask if you didn't tell anyone and it happened could you have helped prevent it from happening. Most importantly as well, help him organise counselling so that he is seeing a professional about this. Good luck, you sound like a great friend.

If the person is close to you then don't you think it would be better to ask him/her if you can support them to seek some help from someone else. A professional or a role model of some sort before you start to treat them as if something is wrong with them. Try to support them by talking about the help you need to deal with the situation you are in. This will help them to understand that it's ok to ask for help when you need it.
Suicide ideation is quite common in this day and age.
