I have never read any of his books and have had the recommended to me. What is the best one to start with?

It's a difficult question, as there are many inter-related books and sub-series.

Some people say that the best one to start with is one of the stand-alones - perhaps Small Gods, or Pyramids.

Another alternative is to start with Guards! Guards!, the first of one of his more popular sub-series, about the City Watch.

One thing I wouldn't recommend is to start with the first one he wrote (The Colour of Magic) - it was fairly patchy, and he got a lot better after about five or so books.

I know he wrote a series about Discworld, though I haven't read any of those books. I'm not really the best one to answer this question, but I did want to mention this book:
"Good Omens" by Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett, as being a pretty fun read, devilishly so.
Others will no doubt chime in with a lot more information for you--

Start off with The Colour of Magic and move on to The Light Fantastic.
All the rest of his books more or less stand alone, but these two go together, and they lay a lot of the groundwork for the rest of The Discworld novels, have a great Christmas.

My favourite author by miles....like Harry Potter for grown ups!

They have re-occuring characters so, although you can read them in any order its probably better to start with the earlier ones as you will appreciate the characters better.

Having said that Wyrd Sisters is one of my favourites which introduces the witches.(pun intended!)

I'm currently reading the latest - Making Money. The main character, Moist von Lipwig was the main character in his last book Going Postal and Making Money is the follow up.

As he has written so many, you have years worth of reading to look forward to!

Have fun!

I'd suggest a topical one for Christmas, called "The Hogfather".His latest "Making Money" is good, you might like "Mort" or the "Wyrd Sisters".
Try his take on science"The science of Discworld"or "The Globe".
You'll find they're all good,I've a bookshelf full.

The first one I read was 'Men At Arms' but I'd say try the Death trilogy first.
