If someone like Rush Limbaugh or Bill O'Reilly endorses a candidate, its one thing, while if Sally Field or Sean Penn dos the same thing its a different story.
Actors, musicians, entertainers, and others who have no serious experience analyzing policy and understanding the difficult and often contradictory requirements of political office, are very unlikely to sway my opinion. In fact, I am more likely to reject a candidate on such a basis.
At least, with a Limbaugh, or even an Al Franken, we know what their beliefs are, and why they believe them. They can make intelligent arguments to back up their opinions. These celebrities carry a scootch more weight in my opinion-making process.
But only a scootch.

I agree celebrity endorsements can and do place a bigger spotlight on a candidate; thus giving their ideals visibility to more people.
And, if someone I find totally repugnant endorses a candidate it is highly unlikely that I would ever vote for them; but, more so because we do not share the same values.
Not sure about Mr. Penn, but, not a big fan, sooo....

If a person follows someone else, celeb or not, without researching the candidate, you deserve what you get. In essence you have waisted your vote by being uninformed. There are people that you can trust more than others but most celebs like Penn, have little real knowledge or the education that I would feel safe in following. Most simply have an agenda of their own.

No. Not at all. Rush and O'Reilly aren't going to endorse a democrat, and I'm not likely to vote republican, so it really doesn't matter what they or Oprah or Chuck Norris Sean Penn or anyone else says.

I pay no attention to what candidate a pundit, performer, news reporter or anyone else famous who hasn't held public office endorses.
I do pay attention to who else currently in office endorses that person and to the seeming endorsements of former Presidents and Governors. They tend to endorse individuals they view as sharing their policy preferences.

I think choosing a candidate based on a celeb endorsement is as good as saying "I can't think for myself, make my decision."
