It depends on you whether you get virus or not. You should be aware of the files you download so you won't get infected.

Limewire will be as safe whether you get "pro" or the free version. It's the material you download, and not Limewire itself, that poses the threat of virii. In a year or so of heavy use, I got no virii. Exercise common sense when picking what you download. You know a movie will be longer than 24K. Right? Watch for files that seem far too small.

Limewire is just a per to per network and it is both safe and legal. It is the stuff that you download that isn't safe, or legal. If you have copy written material in your shared folder, it is visible to anyone that opens Limewire. But is all you want is a p2p so that you can transfer large personal or non-copy written files, then it is perfectly safe.
Also, there a allot of nasty people who offer stuff to download that is infected.
Remember, it's not the tool that's bad, it's how it's used.
