Depends on what you mean by empty. Space is permeated in all directions by energy in all its different forms, so where is space empty?

Space literal means distance. You have to have two or more objects in existence to create space. If there is one, and only one existing object, the only space in existence,is within the object itself. Two or more objects create space between themselves. If nothing exists beyond these objects, than space hasn't been created. That's why people want to know what is at the end of outer space. A brick wall? If there were, than there is 'space' created from you to the wall. If there is no matter on the other side of the wall, than space doesn't yet exists. Or you might say hasn't been created yet. You can't make something out of absolute nothing without putting something tangible in it.
