That's probably the only spot that the sun hits long enough to melt the snow or ice off of the roof. The water then trickles down the roof to the "drip edge". As it drips off of the drip edge it's no longer getting the heat from the sun hitting the roof, so it freezes and form icicles.

My call is Richie. i'm an electrician and a house progression professional. i'm going that may assist you the perfect i will. i don't understand the place to procure that concept, "i understand icicles are a demonstration of unfavorable attic ventilation yet already plenty has been performed to advance it yet I nevertheless get icicles alongside the fringe of the roof." that's not genuine. actually, if all human beings in you community had icicles and you probably did not, then which potential you have unfavorable insulation on your attic. If icicles did not variety that is as a results of warmth out of your homestead getting out of the homestead. seem and homes that have snow on the tops and persons that have spots that don't. loss of heat is what it is. even if if that is chilly sufficient outdoors and there is moisture interior the air, ice will variety the place it desires. with regard to the only thank you to sidestep ice is to maintain the gutter wiped clean out so as that water will drain exact. Ice will nevertheless variety and approximately all you're able to do is bodily get rid of it by potential of breaking it off or use ice soften or rock salt. If the gutters have a great number of trash in them and water does not drain exact, then the water will develop and variety an ice dam which will reason greater ice to variety going up the roof. solid success and God Bless. Jesus Christ loves you.

That does sound unusual!
Icicles form when the air is cold enough for water to freeze after it melts off your roof. I would say that the place where you're seeing icicles is the shady part.

Could it be that the roof above that area receives more sunlight than other areas of your roof causing the snow on it to melt with the runoff forming the icicles?

That is the north side and gets very little sun or warmth if any. They are melting snow that stalls the roof edges, and not enough time to drip to the ground before it freezes again. They are dangerous because they form ice dams on your roof backing up the melted ice causing it to leak and rot the sheathing from never drying out. Also become heavy that will sag your eaves in time.
