I watched Michael Moore's new movie Sicko.. "A Must See". I have to tell everyone,, "I am embarrassed about the America Health Care System". I am not a Moore fan. However, his movie highlights what private market health care does to families that have worked their entire lives only to find themselves broke and bankrupt in their golden years. It was totally unbelievable to see this movie. What can be done? We need to push for socialized medicine. We need to put the money in the Doctors and Patient’s pockets. Not the, insurance and pharmaceutical companies. We Don’t Need Insurance Companies making Millions from claim denial. Why is America so oblivious to this monopoly? I am just beside myself, I have to start doing something or I will find myself and family in the same situation as so many others in America!

Thank you all for your comments. Like me, this hits a nerve with all. Please keep it mind that when I say "Socialist", I am not talking about all the bad meanings this word has been branded. What I mean is to make the "PEOPLE" and "DOCTORS" responsible for health care decisions. NOT the insurance companies. Insurance companies have no ethical motive for making health care decisions. Their decision only effects there profit. That is WRONG! I respect your opinions that oppose me. And if you are receiving good health care I am happy for you. However, what kills me is to see sick people that cannot get treatment because they don’t have money or an elderly couple having to waste their live saving away because they got sick. Again, I am not a Moore fan. I don’t agree with his 911 documentary. But this film Sicko is not about him or his views. He doesn’t bash the Government, he simple talks to people that have been DE-Socialized and forgotten by the Health Care System in America.

Countries that have socialized medicine also have long waiting times for doctor visits. I sit in the doctor's waiting room and the hospital emergency room long enough as it is. Emergency rooms in public hospitals are REQUIRED to treat an emergency regardless of insurance or check book balance. They can not release you until your condition is stabilized. Do other countries do that? If the US has socialized medicine, who will pay for it? We, the Americans, that's who. We will pay in higher taxes which will offset any financial benefits and maybe even cost more than we are paying now. Our government has botched up the welfare and Social Security and school systems, and you want to add socialized medicine to the list? Our government can't control the budget they have now, they don't know how to limit spending and live within their means like us "average Joes". And you trust them to take on another big bureaucratic mess? I am disabled and have better medical coverage than I've had in almost 15 years. Medicare comes out of my disability check (Social Security) and I have no premiums to pay on my prescription coverage. The company which carries my prescription coverage also covers some medical that is not covered by Medicare. Monopoly? Socialized medicine is even more of a monopoly. I now have a choice whether to take Medicare part A, B or both. I choose what company will be my prescription carrier. Socialized medicine? That word, socialized, reminds me of the Union of Soviet SOCIALIST Republic. No commies for me, thank you very much!

Amen.

Wasn't the part horrible where the elderly, mental woman in the hospital gown was dropped off by the taxi? This hospital was in a run-down part of town and he just dropped her off at the curb b/c the other hospital wouldn't treat her b/c she didn't have insurance? The hospital that wouldn't treat her hired a cab to take her away...in her hospital gown with the gap in the back bearing all! The security cameras saw her just walking around on the sidewalk not knowing where she was or where she was going. That was somebody's mom or grandmother. That is what this country has come to.

I think you're attitude of wanting to help is great, but be careful you don't run to the other extreme either. Socialized medicine has not worked well for any other country, why would it work well for U.S. Should there be some changes for some people, especially our elderly? I think yes. But to go across the board socialized would be a huge step that cannot be reversed. Pay close attention to the plans that are being thrown around during this next election and com-pare them to the same plans thrown around by past presidents as they were trying to get elected too. See what will work for the elderly and folks that have had to go on disability, but look at the overall picture: is it another form of well fare? does it allow people to choose their doctors? can ex-military personnel go to a non VA hospital?, etc. Avoid the extreme and look to make a difference, but be careful of the S-word (socialize)

Yes it is an embarrassment. Even though Nixon Created the system, this policy was created way back just after the 1rst world war. President Wilson, made a statement to some of his closest aides and advisers saying "Do you realize right now we have 5.2 of the world's population and 50% of it's wealth?" He then went on saying someting along the lines of ' the rest of the world will be envios and want what we have, therefore, while other nations will settle down to domestic things as providing health care for their people, we will do no such thing. Our only goal is to keep what we have and destroy any nation that chalenges us"
To be honest though I know this for facts, I may be wrong about wich war and President. It might very well have been Truman after world war two...Mary.

I haven't seen the movie, but you have to realize that Moore's answer isn't the answer. Pharmaceutical companies make a lot of money, yes, but they are also the only ones who find cures for diseases. Do you want to limit that? Do you want more of your paycheck going to other people's health care? My dad had a stroke last year and is alive today because of our health care system. If he had his stroke in Canada or England, he'd be dead. Which, makes health care then less expensive in England and other places with socialized medicine because people there die from disease instead of getting expensive treatments for disease and other health issues like in the US.
