Most of what you saw in cowboy movies was based on real life.

90-95% Hollywood.

There were bank robbers and cattle rustlers and outlaws.

But those dusty, dry towns those outlaws "terrorized" in the movies had law enforcement, judges, elected officials and everything. Those dry dusty old west town became modern cities. That could not have happened in a lawless and wild old west.

The story of the American Indian has less to do with warlike Indians raiding wagon trains and more with forced resettlements, land grabs, and a Trail of Tears. America was the villain of that piece, not the natives.
