two questions
1 what is the state of the hideki matsui trade rumors and who do you think is the winner in this trade.
2 do you think phil hughes joba and kennedy should be less untouchable in trades.
i think the yankees would be the losers in the matsui trade

1. I dont think the Yankees will pull the trigger unless they offer big time prospects like Matt Cain.
2. I have mixed feelings. 3 in 10 prospects become good, 1 in 10 become great. So I dont know if we should make them untouchables, somewhat touchables, or you can have them.

There are two big reasons the Yanks are pursuing this trade:
1. Free up a spot for Damon and Giambi. By moving Matsui Damon gets to stay in Left and Giambi is your fulltime DH.
2. Adding another young arm to the rotation allows them to move two of the kids for Santana, if the Twins will talk to them again. I dont feel that Haren is worth two of them, but then again I'm not in charge, am I?
Extra Credit: Matsui for Lowry and possibly Sanchez frees up a little bit of Salary room for the Yanks doesn't it? And the Giants have a couple of bucks to spend unless they want to post bail for Barry.
So to give you a straight forward answer to your questions:
1. The trade benefits both teams about equally, the Giants get the better player, but the Yankees free up some very important space on their roster.
And...
2. If they can get Santana then Hughes and Kennedy should be moveable, not Joba, Joba will be competing for Rookie of the Year (he didnt get the innings last year) and Cy Young this year. But dont let them both go for Haren.

Matsui had a subpar season last year...As much as I like him, I think trading him might work in their favor. They have four outfielders and Damon is a better lead off hitter than Matsui is fifth hitter. But Matsui does provide protection for A-Rod. But what is more important for the Yanks?...Bullpen or having four outfielders...they don't need them all.
Hughes, Chamberlain and Kennedy will be great pitchers...Who knows, two of them might turn into Roy Hollidays or Johan Santanas, anything is possible. Keeping them is the right idea, but they need another starter to sure up the rotation and give Kennedy some more time in the minors.

1.I personally would hate to see matsui go but baseball is a business and he needs to be traded to help the team.Me need pitching and the Giants have pitching. We need DH fo Giambi who CANNOT play 1st base. Also when he is traded that will open a spot for Damon to play outfield.Damon should stick to Lf at this point in his career since his skills at Cf have detiriorated.
2.I believe that Joba should be the only one who is untuchable.Due to his performance last year and his stuff.Kennedy and Hughes were not really eyepopping last year and for their HYPE the yankees could get alot in return.Anyways expect one of these pitchers to get traded because there is not enough roon for all 3 in the rotation.
1.Wang 2.Pettite 3.Hughes 4.Mussina 5.Chamberlain 6.Igawa 7.Kennedy 8.Olenhdorf

Well being a Giants fan I disagree with this trade. Hideki would help out the Giants line-up if he stayed healthy. On the other hand I would rather see them hold on to Lowry. He had a decent season last year, and for the first time in decades the Giants actually have good pitching.
The Yankees want more than Lowry, and were actually asking about Jonathan Sanchez. The Yankees can have Sanchez, because he is too inconsistent. As far as Hedeki's no trade clause goes, he already said he is willing to wave it.
As far as Lincecum and Cain involved in the trade, It's not happening. They are too valuable.

If the Yankees are going to trade Matsui I believe it has to be a package deal involving a pitching star and not a prospect or good young pitcher. The Yankees already have good young pitching that are still a few years away. They need a star to help solidify the rotation that will give them a chance to win in 2008. I am a fan of Matsui because he adds class to MLB and would not like to see him leave a team where he has so many fans.

Sounds to me like the Yanks are about to get robbed if they trade Matsui. If the Giants were willing to let Cain or Lincecum go, it would be worth it, but it doesn't sound like they're offering much.
If the Twins demanded we give up two of our young stud pitchers for Santana, then the Yanks have every right to demand one of the Giants' young studs for Matsui. And besides, Matsui has a no-trade-clause which could be hard to get him to waive.
and to answer your question, Joba is untouchable, end of story. Hughes and Kennedy are not off-limits, but the Yanks aren't trading both of them.
