Check the alternator belt to see if it is not loose, and check if the battery conncetions are clean and tight. if that all checks out to be ok, then the best thing for you to do is to take your vehicle to autozone, advance, or a reputable mechanic and let them perform a test on the charging system. That test puts one hell of a strain on the charging system to see if alternator is "kicking in" when it is supposed to and checks the output of the alternator under a load. If that passes, you could have nothing more than a faulty voltage gauge.

I really don't know what the problem is, but I can tell you what I'd do to try to isolate the problem. Put a voltmeter on your battery. Try turning on accessories with the engine running (alternator running) and with the engine off (alt not running) and see what the affect is. Could be your meter is having a problem. No way should there be an instantaneous voltage drop that large just by turning something on.

it might be a bad alternator, or just the installation. the belt might not be tight enough and skipping providing a lower voltage than the one you really want. go check it and make some one check the out put for you.

if you've checked the battery, alt. and belt, sounds like you might have a short somewhere in the ground. if so, good luck finding it. they can be a bit*h.

It is not uncommon to get a bad alternator. Have it checked.
