I use both. I put clear chaser lights on the inside, near the center of the tree, and colored lights near the end of the branches. The chaser lights give the tree a twinkling effect while the colored lights burn steady.

It depends on the color of your christmas tree.
If the tree is white, use colored..
If the tree is colored, use plain white or any color that is uniform.

I prefer just plain white so that's what I put on my x-mas tree.

white this year, but that's becuase we put up the fake tree and it already has lights on it.
