My motherboard supports 2GB RAM. Im not sure if it is advisable to put 1GB and 256MB together. They are different brand.. one is Kingston (1GB) and KUK (256)..

Assuming this is just a home pc and not trying to overclock.

These will work.

Ideally you should have matched memory,

2 sticks of 512 or 2 sticks of 256 etc

But sometimes you just have to use what is around. You need to find out the speed of the 256, since if its slower than the 1 gig it will run at this lower speed, if the 1 gig is the slower then you will be fine.

The mixed brand will not make any difference.

Personally I would not bother with the 256, it will not make much of a difference.

It'll work only if the frequency of both modules match. I mean,if you have 256 DDR2 RAM module with 667 MHz, you'll have to add module of 512 DDR2 RAM with 667 MHz only. Other frequency modules such as 800 MHz or 533 MHz will not work.Just check that the frequencies match and you should not have any problem in putting 256 DDR2 with 512 DDR2.

Go to Crucial Memory and run their free memory scanner:
http://www.crucial.com/systemscanner/

It's free

They will tell you what speed, type and whether or not the modules have to be the same. Older computers used to have exactly the same modules but newer ones don't and many new ones don't even have to have the same speed memory, they will all be run at the speed of the slowest module.

Hope this helps, bob

If these sticks are of the same type and speed, then it should be fine. If one of the sticks is slower then the other then both will run at the slower speed.

Actually, it is my understanding that what you propose to do isn't possible at all. You need to have matching RAM in the two slots, so you'll have to buy two 1 GBs.
