Ships in a bottle is an ancient art form. The ships that they put in the bottle were usually the replica of battle sailing ships - as a memory of a ship that once was. The artisans attached strings to the sails so that they can be pulled down. Once the ship is in the bottle, another string is pulled that brings the sails back up.

You don't actually - you put the pieces in through the bottle and essemble the ship inside (although I have seen a few other tricks in doing thing buy have the ship done outside the bottle - but erecting or raising the sails only inside the bottle).
Good Luck!!!

The ship is inserted into the bottle with the mast in a collapsed position, and it is pulled upward once inside. If it's a mass production, then the bottle is in two pieces and is assembled after the ship is in position.

It's all to do with your bi-focals, you see.
You take the bottle down to the sea and put it on the ground.
Look down and the bottle looks big.
Look up and the ship looks small.
Simple eh?
You put the small ship into the big bottle and take it home.
However, you must remember to put little holes in the bottle top so all the passengers can breathe.

You fix the masts with hinges but folded down flat against the deck, with the top with a longish line of rigging from the top of the masts
Then you push the boat into the bottle, with the top of the masts pointing forwards away from the neck. you usually settle it on some plasticine or similar 'waves' then carefully pull the
strings of rigging fixed to the top of the masts, as you pull, the masts come upright, and when they're in place you fix the strings to the neck of the bottle and voila!

there are basically two ways. 1. cut the bottom of the bottle off, insert ship. glue bottom back on, OR 2. many hours and much patience with a presision set of tweezers and forceps etc. (through the tiny opening) and build the boat from scratch inside.
