determine wether the player was aiming at the basket or not...so how do we know if it's free throws or just a foul? What is the precise rule?

It is strictly a judgment call by the referees as to whether the player was passing or shooting.

Well im a ref, and i call it that if they leave there feet, and are looking at the basket, such as a player posting up and they pass it to them but are hit in the act, its a shooting foul. But sometimes you have to use judgement.

if the ball is heading the direction of the rim, or at least the player is trying to throw the ball to the rim. more often than not its a judgement call and most smart players will just toss the ball in the direction of the rim when they hear the whistle or know they got fouled hard enough

im a ref, if a player is obviously going to the basket and his feet have left the ground he is in the act of shooting, which means he is shooting the moment he leaves the ground. but they hav to be going at the ring or else u just look stupid calling it in the back court or sumthing

if the player is in a shooting motion, he gets two free throws.
