The Visayas State University (VSU) was formerly known as the Leyte State University (LSU). It was renamed as VSU by virtue of Republic Act No. 9437, which was signed by her Excellency President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo on April 27, 2007.

Visayas State University was formerly named the Leyte State University (LSU) in Baybay City, Philippines.
It is located 8 km. north of Baybay City Leyte. 40 km south of Ormoc City Leyte.
It continues to specialize in agricultural research and education, including work in jatropha propagation and development of a dwarf macapuno coconut.
The university also hosts a program on reforestation, and features an annual pig-skinning competition.
