Dell or HP would be my choice if I were in the market for a new laptop. Probably leaning slightly for the Dell. Yes, you can get cheaper laptops, but it's hard to beat the Dell's when you compare apples to apples. (HP does come close though.) Dell ALWAYS has some sort of coupon available for $$$ off or free upgrades, and has lots of choices when configuring a computer. I know it may seem trivial, but just try to get a yellow or red laptop from someplace other than Dell. Not so easy! (Although I wouldn't recommend buying a laptop based on color, it is nice to have the choice!)

Since you'll most likely be using this for years to come, I would think about how you're going to be using this in the future. For instance, if you're going to be toting this thing around you might want to consider a lighter and smaller one. If it's primarily going to stay at home, you might consider one with a 17" screen and full size keyboard with the number pad. You get the picture:-)

Anyway, I'm starting to ramble.... Consider yourself lucky, a laptop is an awesome gift. Have fun!

Dear Sarah, gaming is asking very much from hardware, but when it's a must to use a laptop (desktop is much cheaper)buy one with a separated graphic card (so you don't have to share memory) when you have a laptop/pc don't forget to update the software also install an antivirus program found at http://free-av.com
