Yes, 'something' does only occur once in a person's life and that is this very moment. If you are capable to be aware of this and then are able to relate and respond to what ever shows up in your life - in this moment, then this is the most wisdom you can live and there will be no opportunity you might miss.
You are surrounded by examples and you will live and experience these...

Yes definitely, number one, would be birth and death. It happens just once.
Now about opportunities, is about the decisions we take. I have seen clearly when it has been a good opportunity, for example a contract in a good theatre. But it also came out of going for my dreams, even if I was afraid. So I took the decision to follow that dream, which created the wanted opportunity.
At the same time we have many options, I think a good way to know if you are taking a good decision, is to recognize your level of interest.
Nevertheless every new day happens just once too, as soon as I think/type this, that second disappeared and that second was unique, as each new following second.
So all the time something is occurring ONCE. Therefore in many spiritual practices they tell you to cherish the present as it is unique.
Going back to the opportunity part (I am jumping from one to another lol), I believe most people would identify a good opportunity. But I also believe that there are many unique opportunities we can take, it depends the path that interest you the most.

Of course some things occur only once--witnessing and/or experiencing the birth of your first child is an experience you can never duplicate..not even by having more kids..because it is something you have never done before you are totally surpirsed by the feelings you experience. And everybody likes to think they have wisdom to recognize opportunity...whether or not you act on it is another story all together....

Some things may only be once in a life time-first kiss, first day of school, etc.
Recently, my fiance's boss and best friend invited us to go on a trip for his 30th birthday-on a private yacht in the French Riviera. We recognized the opportunity, but unfortunately had to turn it down...for financial reasons. Luckily, we will have the opportunity for fabulous trips in the future as long as they are friends:)

Too many people live beyond their means. So when an opportunity arises that involves some risk, they have to allow it to pass them by.
