You have to install it because it's software, I don't even know how you would think you wouldn't have to install it. It uses a minimum of 512 RAM but since you probably actually mean hard drive space then it's at least 6 gigs according to my box but that isn't including expansions and patches and I have a pretty old copy of the game. Maybe upwards of 10 gigs.
