How do I get rid of very old masking tape which has dried onto the outside of our plastic window frames?

The masking tape has been on the outside frame of our PVC windows for some years. We have bought the house and want to redecorate. I am aprehensive of burning the tape off and do not know if there is a chemical which will get rid of it.

Try eucalyptus oil. Its fantastic and natural. You can get it in liquid or spray. Go for the undiluted variety and you should find it in supermarkets and it is safe to use on the surface you described. It may remove the tape immediately or you may need to leave it on for 5 mins. Eucalypus oil removes almost anything permanent old glue, permanent marker, old paint etc. Just be careful of the surface tho as it can lift some paints. Hope this helps.

I have heard of a hairdrier being used with great success, it lifts the tape , and the residue can be removed with lighter fluid ( if still available ) or petrol (gasoline)
Finally buff the entire PVC with Brasso metal polish. UK or the cream liquid that car sprayers use to "cut-down " car enamel,

Maplin Electronics in the UK do a product just for this purpose it's called label remover, it works !
It comes in a spray can and is very cheap, doesn't harm any surfaces , and they do mail order international. Check their web page for details.

Hot water,washing up liquid and a scourer.
You could also try something like nail varnish remover.

I agree "Goof Off" or "Oops". I like "Oops" myself.

Both dissolve the glue on the tape.

Just warm soapy water, let it soak in then it will start to move with a little rubbing

try turps or white spirit should do the trick
