I am watching the movie version of the Manga "Death Note". I obviously understand the rule where Kira can make up how the criminal dies (40 sec/make up how the baddies die), but I dont get the rule about writing the description of how that criminal dies within 400 seconds.

There was mention of the "eye of the reaper" as well. I was confused by all that...about the using the victim's life force as food or something, the numbers floating above Kira's head...and also about knowing when people die or something?

Basically, once you write a name down in the Deathnote that person is doomed and nothing can be done to save them. If you write in details about their death you can partially control their actions, but if you don't they simply die of a heart attack.

The "Eyes of the Reaper" are a deal that a person can make with a Death God. In exchange for half of their lifeforce they can gain the Reaper's ability to see a person's name and remaining life energy by looking at their face. Since Reapers survive by feeding off of people's lifeforce, this makes it easier for them to locate people that will give them lots of energy. For humans this just makes it easier for them to use the Deathnote.
