Literally speaking, it would be a non-living growth. In a metaphorical sense, it would be some form of growth that didn't follow a natural and/or logical progression.

FAILURE TO THRIVE(non-organic)
Compounds void of carbon such as minerals.
INORGANIC:not of animal/vegetable origin.
