The eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month (i.e. 11:00 a.m. on the 11th November 1918).

The beginning of the end of the war was when the Allies took the Hindenburg Line on 26th September. This was really the last line of defence for the Germans and after that the Axis Powers very rapidly fell apart. Having suffered colossal casualties (the Germans lost around 6 million) they sued for peace very quickly.

The cease-fire came into effect on the 11th November 1918 at 11am. It ended because the Allied forces finally ended the stalemate in the trenches and made great advances into German held territory. Also, social order had begun to break down in Germany due to lack of food. fuel etc.
