It's just the way it's always been, and the 1st past the post system generally supports this way(as is true in most other countries, there normally is one main right and left party). But even though these days both parties have been taken over by a certain wing of them, both parties have members that go pretty far apart on their ideas Democrats from South Dakota for example often wind up being more conservative then Republicans from say Maine. Also system wise party members here have more freedom. In parliamentary systems the parties are usually more specific in their platform because members need to vote with the party while in the congressional system while generally you can expect a person to vote with the main part of their party, congressmen are free to vote how they please and often have to break party lines since a Republican from Connecticut is going to have to run on a pretty different platform then say a Republican from Mississippi for example

There are only two parties in USA because that really best way to rule the situation. People suppose that THEY are main "policy makers", but only very rich people (controlizing the biggest american companies (exonmobil, IBM etc) have real power. They are buying each elections, creatin' "democracy". Yes, republicians may be opposition against to democrates, or backward. But capitalists still rule the country, people think that they live in democracy. Capitalists haven't got real opposition to themselves. Propoganda does its work totally.

Coalition governments tend to be weak and fall apart at the slightest tension resulting in much wasted time and willy nilly policies as each new coalition has to be formed. The choice was intentional to avoid this but there are many parties; the roadblocks put up keeps them from being more then a spoiler, though.
