Unfortunately, most people rationalize their behavior such that the two become one.

It's not so simple and I will give you a real example from my own life.

My friend told me that she had a doctor's appointment. She did not ask me to go with her, but a little voice in my head (the voice of conscience) told me to offer to go with her and I did so. She told me her appointment was for 8am and that she wanted to be there at 7am. This meant that I would have to get up at 5:30am because I am very slow in the morning and also I am not a morning person. When I get up too early in the morning, I feel sick all day. I began to regret my offer and I wanted to cancel it. My friend (I believe knew I wanted to cancel) said she would think it over and let me know the next day whether or not she wanted me to come. By this time, I had already decided that I did want to cancel because of 4 reasons:

1. I would feel unwell the whole day
2. taking time off from work,
3. this friend had not asked anyone to go with her, which meant she was willing and able to go alone
4. she is the kind of friend who does not go out of her way to help her friends including me.

So when my friend called the next day, I cancelled by telling a white lie that my boss would not give me the time off, which my friend accepted.

So now you see that what one should do and what one wants to do is a very complicated, complex issue. Perhaps if this friend had been a closer, better friend, I would not have cancelled. I also felt very bad for making the offer in the first place and then cancelling and in future, I will be more careful about offering to help - I will be absolutely sure that's what I want to do.

The ironic question is, which path do you want to choose, and which path should you choose? It's up to you, and you alone.

Its a matter of following your heart...or following your mind...and that isn't something someone can just answer for you.

The best things in life come from struggle, and thats what makes it so much more worth it in the end...so either you play it safe, or you take the leap..but you never get anywhere taking baby steps forever.
