I have seen this several times with certain DVDs.
The fix that always works for me is to Replace the MPEG2 Codec.
KLITE has an excellent Codec pack that is easy to install and is free.
The link is in the source. Make sure to replace your existing MPEG2 Codec

Have you muted the sound?
Is the driver for the sound card installed?
Are the speakers connected properly?
Is the power for the speakers proper?
Which Media player are your using? Some media players can also have their own mute function.
Did you try to see if the DVD was working for your friend or something, if not replace the DVD.

Try Media Player Classic or VLC Media Player.

Codec problem.

The easy solution I used is play the dvd with Media Player Classic.

It's a free software you can search at google and download it. Don't be fool by the name Classic, it supports a wide range of codec so far everything that doesn't work on my WMP works with media player classic.
