I know having emergency flashers is totally illegal and I have no desire to install them. However, I would really love to paint my car black and white complete with bumpers. I am doing this NOT out of mockery for the police, but out of respect for the police. I really like the look of a police car and always fantasize being behind the wheel of one of those vehicles.

There probably is a law against it. You can understand why there would be. Imagine someone in distress running toward your car thinking you are a police officer. We really cannot have that.

Impersonation of an officer is illegal. Having a car would fall under this category. In my area, the police force has started purchasing new vehicles and selling the old ones. THey stripped the marking and lights and a few other features, but the black and white paint jobs get me everytime. As an added benefit (Not for me), they get twice the "cops," to patrol the streets and scare people into obeying the law.

I must tell you this story as your question brought back so many memories from 40 years ago. My late husband and I were dating at the time. The CHP (California Highway Patrol) used Chrysler with the angled head lights at the time 1964. They would come up behind you and in addition to their flashers, they would blink their lights and because they were angled, the top ones would blink and then the bottom ones. Well my husband (whose Mom and Dad owned a Chrisler same model as the CHP drove) fixed their lights so they would blink just like the CHP lights. And he and his buddy would drive around at night with the ROTC hats on (me in the back seat ducking down) and come up behind people and blink their lights at them. People would pull over to the side of the road and he would drive on past and we would all be laughing at them. Thanks for the memories. Such delinquents eh?

It's not legal, no.

Best Buy even had to repaint their black and white VW Bug "Geek Squad" cars as the CHP said they looked too much like police cars.
