Th grommlets have hardened from age and attempting removal leads to crak then breakage- I need a substance that will sodten the rubber- I tried brake fluid- it ate the english rubber!!!!!!!!!

If they already crack, they have dry rotted, you cannot rejuvenate dry rotted grommets, Replace them, That is the only fix

Brake fluid is not recommended for organic rubber. I have had alot of success with automatic transmission fluid. Apply it to the parts daily for three to four days prior to removal. Once off, clean off the fluid as it will continue to swell and soften the rubber. After it's good and dry, rub some skin cream or other product that is high in lanolin. This will rejuvenate the rubber and keep it from re-hardening for at least three years.

I'm not totally sure about "english" rubber, but I use Armor All to soften the grommets on my suspension. It takes a few applications, but works well.

You just need to buy new grommets.

Chemicaly their gone. You would have to replace them.
