In Indian yoga,guidelines for good sound and deep sleep are detailed in yoga-nidra.It has two important aspects, 'posture' and ' breathing.'
The most comfortable posture for your body to sleep is reached by the body in last hours of night long.sleep. After tossing in all directions for the whole night,it gets into the most appropriate position in the last stages of sleep.When you get up in the morning, do not move even a limb.Observe the position of each component of the body,viz your head,shoulder, arms,torso legs etc.This posture is going to be the permanent posture whenever you wish to sleep..
Next comes the breathings.You have to mentally count backwards from 99 to 1, when you exhale .Now when you inhale a breath, do not count any number.Next you exhale and say in your mind 98.Like this no counting while taking the breath in and reverse counting when the breath goes out.Your mind should not have any other thoughts. If any other thought do intrude in your mind, you have to push it out and restart counting from 99 backwards to 1.
The yoga-nidra exercise is very simple and you will master over it in a day or two.You will never have any sleeping problem in your entire life.You will be astonished to find a great improvement in your health and looks. I expect you will teach this exercise to as many persons as possible and text me your results after a week.

Drink some hot milk, and take two benydryls if you have them. If not, take some cough syrup.
Read a magazine or a book. This will make you sleepy. Try and clear your mind and lay down. Eventually, you will fall asleep.

Stop typing and go to your bed. It just might be easier to fall asleep while you're laying down.

Try listening to your favorite songs... or, try reading something like magazines, newspapers and books... You'll fall asleep as fast as you want...

i exercise when i can't sleep. i figure using up my energy will make me sleepy. works for me plus the bonus of getting in shape =)
