The Mongol empire was the largest, however it was not built entirely by a single conqueror. Genghis started with a small empire he inherited, and his descendants built on his success. A great empire to be sure, just not built by one leader.

As for conquered by a single individual, the empire of Alexander the Great was the largest. It didn't last very long however, since Alexander's descendants ended up losing pretty much the whole thing within a generation.

The largest empire ever - by area and by number of people - was the British Empire. It reached it's peak in the Victorian era (not, as suggested during the reign of Elizabeth I, when English territory was very limited). But would you really call Queen Victoria a conqueror?

The largest "conquered" empire would be the Mongolian under the leadership of Genghis Khan which is second only to the British Empire in size.

I believe the Mongolian Empire was the largest, not the Soviet Empire, and there apparently never was a formal Soviet Empire.

I believe it was the British Empire at its peak. But that empire was not acquired by an individual, like Alexander the
Great or Tamerlane.

By population, Chairman Mao.
By area, Joseph Stalin.

That's probably why Little Kimmy in North Korea has such a chip on his shoulder...

It would have been FDR, but he didn't hold on to his gains in Asia or Western Europe, and he didn't listen to Gen. Patton's advice about advancing to Moscow.
